MELLISH Jas. of B Battery, R. A.– Died April 4, 1880 at Halifax, Nova Scotia – Drowned in Halifax harbour by the upsetting of a boat – (JRO 80-81).

MELMAY – a Quarter-master – Died June 10, 1878 in Quebec City – Loses his life on board the Allan steamer Sarmatian by exposure to foul gas in the hold of the vessel – (JRO 78).

MÉNARD, David – Died July 12, 1886 in Ottawa, Ontario – Killed by an accidental discharge of a revolver – (ADS 86).

MENZIE, J. – Died October 20, 1886 near Bervie, Ontario – Accidentally shot by D. Robertson.. – (ADS 86).

MERCER, Andrew – deceased – After his death intestate, a lady who had for many years lived with him as his supposed housekeeper claimed that she was his wife, and her son the lawful heir to the large property possessed by the deceased in Toronto and vicinity. The Ontario Government refused to acknowledge the rights of these parties but, on November 14, 1881, the Supreme Court of Canada reversed the decision.

MERCER, Viola (Mrs.) – a young widow – Died September 9, 1879, Castleton, Ontario – Commits suicide by shooting herself with a pistol in the store of Mr. F. E. McKeyes, a man for whom she had declared an ardent affection. The coroner's jury attritute the cause of her suicide to an unreturned affection for McKeyes; but exonerate him from blame – (JRO 79).

MEREDITH, John W. C., clk. of D. Ct. – Died May 24, 1881, London, Ontario aged 72 – Drowned by the upsetting of the steamer Victoria – (JRO 80-81).

MERKEL, Mrs Andrew – Died August 14, 1879, Chester, Nova Scotia – Dies from the effects of burns received from her clothing catching fire on the day previous. It appears that Mr. Merkel was smoking, when a spark from his pipe set fire to his wife's dress – (JRO 79).

MERRITT, Charles – a well-known citizen of St. John, New Brunswick – Died February 27, 1878 in Toronto, Ontario aged 60 – (Obit. 78).

MERRITT, Rev. Benjamin (Baptist) – Died August 22, 1882 at Hampstead, New Brunswick aged 69 – (Obit. 82).

MERRY, John Wesley, M.A. (1870) – Born in 1843 in Township of Magog, Quebec – Died April 5, 1884 at Sherbrooke, Quebec – (Obit. 84).

MERRY, W. A. – Late Sec'y of the Montreal Building and Investment Co. – Native of Ireland – Died April 24, 1886 in Montreal, Quebec aged 83 – He came to Canada early in life. – (Obit. 86).

METCALF, W. G. (Dr.) – Medical Supdt. of the Rockwood Asylum, Kingston – Died August 16, 1885 at Kingston, Ontario – Stabbed on August 13, 1885 by an insane inmate, named Maloney, whilst walking through the wards of the Rockwood Asylum. Maloney is committed to stand his trial for the murder. – (JRO 85).

METCALF, Wm. G. – M.D. (1874) – Supdt. of the Asylum for the Insane, Kingston, Ontario – Born in 1847 at Uxbridge, Ontario – Died August 16, 1885 at Kingston, Ontario – Died the result of wounds received at the hand of an insane patient. – (Obit. 85).

METCALFE, Jas. – M.P. for East York in the House of Commons (1867-78) – Born in 1821 in England – Died September 13, 1886 in Toronto, Ontario – Died suddenly – He had resided at one time in one of the Australian colonies. – (Obit. 86).

METHERELL, Jos. – Died November 11, 1882, Woodstock, Ontario – Struck by a splinter from a saw – (ADS 82).

METHIVIER, Marie (Mlle), who in conjunction with the Abbé Auclair, founded in 1852, the Hospice de la Miséricorde, in the city of Quebec – Died August 28, 1885 in Quebec City, aged 73 – (Obit. 85).

MEUDELL, W. F. – Formerly collector of customs at Toronto, and subsequently at Belleville, Ontario – Native of Scotland – Died January 10, 1885 at Belleville, Ontario, aged 85 – (Obit. 85).

MEYER, Ludwig G. – Clerk of the Division Ct. (1856) – Born April 25, 1809 at Rostock, Mechlenburg – Died March 21, 1886 at Seaforth, Ontario – He came to Canada in 1833. He was the father of Mr. H. W. C. Meyer, now Mayor of Wingham, Ontario. – (Obit. 86).
